Good Horror?
Depends on what you are looking for. Can you give us a little more? I'd say if you want some very brutal stuff, try Jack Ketchum, The Girl Next Door, and others. Clive Barker is a great horror writer, such as the Books of Blood/Hellraiser stuff, but my favorite of his is Weaveworld. OLD Dean Koontz, all the one word titles are good, such as Whispers.
I know you said no King, but I love him, and his earlier stuff is great. The Shining always scared me. If you like zombies, his latest, Cell wasn't bad. I also loved Pet Semetary, Dead Zone, and Salem's Lot as far as more King.
Speaking of vampires/zombies, I just finished I Am Legend by Matheson, and it wasn't bad.
As far as shocking, nothing has beat American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.

I'm going to have to recommend I Am Legend because that's the book club book right now and we need all of the participation that we can get.

If you're looking for obscure, you might want to try Thomas Tryon's The Other. It's a quick, creepy little read (the cover's always given me the heebie jeebies).

Ive never read any Lovecraft, must check him out sometime.
Dark past, bright future, living abroad, well read. You're like the reincarnation of James Dean, hopefully with better driving skills ( Tomstrong on me, best compliment I ever got! )

I recommend...I always thought that Poe is King of Horror...I hoped it`ll be blood curding, but it was not...not for me...
And that I saw Lovecraft `s book...I `ve bought his book just because I liked the typography...
And now I love his creation.... He is my King of Horror !
Yeah, the only reason I wouldn't read that book is because the movie looks awful.
It is like what happened to I Robot, Paycheck and Minority Report. I picture a conversation like this:
"Yeah, I just finished reading I Am Legend"
"COOOL did the vampire zombies all have sketchers on like in the movie?"
"Ummm, no they - "
"-HAHAHA, maybe they left that out in the book. Those boots were awesome, I bet Black Eyed Peas made a showing in the book right? Wasn't it awesome when they flew down in their space ship and did a music video in a Starbucks to distract the zombies?"
On the flip side I just finished 'No Country For Old Men' and I can't wait to see the movie.

I hear what you're saying. PKD I personally think is very hard to adapt well. I liked Robt and MR. And Paycheck didn't totally suck, but you just don't get the nuance of the books. NCFOM is a fantastic movie, maybe the best I saw all year. And for every I Robot there is a Blade Runner, so I'm glad they are trying at least.

I agree with the jist of what you're saying in regards to PKD's work not translating well into film, but I can't really agree with making comparisons between PKD and Asimov (I, Robot)--assuming that you were even doing so.
Mostly just referring to the bastardization of books to movies. I don't know much about Asimov, never really got into his books but I've read a number of PKD. I think they did a good job with A Scanner Darkly. I mean, Robert Downey, Keanu, Woody, Winona Ryder... it's like they went to a Hollywood rehab clinic to get actors. Genius.
Ring by Koji Suzuki was really creepy. Also the other two books of the series - Spiral and Loop. Really good horror in my opinion.

try the short works Ramsey Campbell.
his latest collection is Alone with the Horrors

True...and the rotoscoping was pretty cool, too.
I've always wanted to see what Terry Gilliam could do with some PKD...maybe The Man in the High Castle or The Crack in Space.
Something Wicked this Way Comes by Bradbury is aways a classic.
I just Picked up Mister B. Gone but I haven't started it up yet

Edward Lee's stuff is pretty fun. Try The Bighead for pure grossout. That one taught me what colostomy holes are made for. His Portrait of a Psychopath is an amazing novel as well. Disturbing and heartbreaking.
Dread in the Beast and This Symbiotic Fascination are beautiful written, disturbing as fuck gorefests. Charlee Jacob is also a very nice lady.
Richard Laymon writes some fun books, usually full of blood and sex. Try Savage. Jack the Ripper meets the Old West. In the Dark, Island, Midnight's Lair, and After Midnight are great too.
Charles Grant writes some great quiet horror. My favorite is actually The Soft Whisper of the Dead, which reads like an old Hammer production that got lost on it's way to the theatres. His most famous is probably The Pet, which is pretty good as well.
Lost Souls, Drawing Blood, Wormwood, Exquisite Corpse and her The Crow novel are all amazing horror novels featuring goths and serial killers. Poppy Z Brite always manages to squeeze a tender love story into her works. I haven't read her chef novels yet but I want to.
Bentley Little writes some good stuff but a lot of people get burned out by him. He can't really end a novel, but most of them are fun reads.
There's more but I'm tired and don't want to type anything else tonight.
