Just take a long eithernet cable from your router to the back of the xbox.
Maybe you should set up a wireless network. You'll need to buy a wireless dongle for the xbox
You might have your router behind a firewall or something, but theres help on xbox.com if it doesnt automatically work.
To play games online you'll need to pay to upgrade from Silver to Gold.
On Silver you can still get demos for free and buy Live Arcade games.

questions:

-roughly how much will this cost with a starter kit and an ethernet wire and/or setting up a wireless connection? In the hundreds?

-will the performance of my com0puter effect game performance? If my computer is a little slow will gameplay be slow?

this is all very confusing for me as Ive never even been in the presence of a console that had Live. Its sounding to me like a lot of trouble, like I may spend a day hooking it up only to get less then average results.

Don't do it dude. A friend of mine's a recovering addict, he eventually took a pic axe to his xbox and frisbee'd Halo 2 into the road from his window.

I protest that I don't get a signature by writing this after each post.

I dont have a xbox or xbox live, but I can still answer this...

First off, Are you on Highspeed internet? DSL or Cable? if you're on dial up, forget it.

I wouldnt bother with wireless, it would just confuse you. A ethernet cable thats 10ft would probley be about $15.

and no, your computer wouldnt affect the xbox at all.

Xbox Live Gold is $50 for 12 months, $20 for 3 months and $8 for one.
If you get it in stores you can pick it up bundled with a headset/mic, if you dont wanna talk you can upgrade with your credit card from the console.

If your router has more than one ethernet out you wont need to use your computer at all (unless it isnt connecting and you have to configure the router)

Im not going to get this just now. Im going to wait until I have enought money to get the 12 monthys and a new game. oblivion isnt really an online game.

Other than the Xobx you'll want

- Live Gold, $50 for a year, though a lot of games come with a free test
- Either an ethernet cable to run to your router or a wireless adaptor http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessnetadapter/ which works really well, but it's $100.

and though you don't need them, i highly suggest
- http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360rechargebatterypack/default.htm Rechargable batteries (2) so you always have one in the hopper (though mine last me 2 or 3 weeks of casual play)
- http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360quickchargekit/ the quick charge kit
- And once you're really loving Live, you'll want http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessheadset/default.htm the wireless headset.
- You'll probably also want some extra cash to buy a few Live Arcade games. There are some amazingly fun games on Arcade, that are pretty cheap.

Re: XBOX (360) Live Questions.

ok so, uh, update!

I have more then enough money to buy the wireless thingy that hooks into the thingy int he back of the 360 game machine thingy.

but Im still worried about game performace. when I played that Soldier Front game online I had some serious lag problems and my internet sucks. I just dont want to spend all that money and find serious lag problems as a result of my shitty internet performance. any ideas? would hooking it up directly to the computer by cable make if faster? stick to wireless? give up? so many little technoligically neurotic questions a straight answer will never be enough for me.

also, if I use wireless and the modem/router thing is across the room, should there be a clear line of sight between them for the, um, wireless signal or something? my 360 is slightly behind a big tv.

Re: XBOX (360) Live Questions.

- You don't need line of sight

- If you can hard-wire it, do that.  It will save you $100 and wires always work better than none.

- If you go wireless, the performance of your internet connection should be the only real bottleneck.  I've used the wireless adapter for a few years now and it works perfectly fine.  My wireless router is in a different room, one floor above my Xbox.

- If by "Soldier front" game, you mean Frontlines, that game has pretty shitty netcode and my understanding is pretty much everyone has serious lag issue with it.  Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3 don't typically have lag.

- If you're concerned about it working for you, buy it at a place like Best Buy where you can return it if it doesn't work as well as you'd like.

Re: XBOX (360) Live Questions.

right now Im using the Pelican Wireless Gaming Adaptor and its giving me grief.

just last night I learned of this wirelees adaptor http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adapter/dp/B000B6MLV4/ref=pd_sim_e_3

people say its better but I dont want to return what I have and cough up more money unless it really is better, even ifits by a slim margin.

anybody have any experience with this?

I asked this qiestion on yahoo answers but nobody has answered it yet.

Re: XBOX (360) Live Questions.

also, Ive heard that you can get a better connection by just buying a long ethernet cord and hooking it up directly to the modem (as FJ suggested earlier)

thing is my Linksys router already has two computers hooked to it (with less then steallar internet performance) and I think the laptop is using it wirelessly but I know fuck all about that.

so wouldnt that just make gameplay slower? or would it have no effect at all?

fuck I hate technology.

Re: XBOX (360) Live Questions.

I would have replied sooner, if I didn't have to spend the last few days fixing my computer...

- If you can just run an ethernet cable, that will always be your best option.

- even wireless the only limiting factor should be the performance of your internet connection.  For instance, if you have a computer that is on at the same time you're gaming, and it is downloading large files, expect your gaming performance to go down.  So turn off torrents when you're gaming!

- the microsoft wireless adaptor works great, it's what I use.  Though i can't imagine it performs any better than what you have.  I like it because it's small and clips right on to the back of the xbox.
