This guy deserves a thread of his own.

He is one of Irelands finest writers and if you like your thrillers then you should definitley check out his Charlie Parker series which begins with the superb Every Dead Thing.
If you are interested in a fairytale for adults pick up my personal favourite The Book Of Lost Things. He also has a short story collection called Nocturnes that goes down well.

John Connollys books are best described as Thrillers but every now and then some horror creeps in, the beauty of it is you dont know when.

Like Chuck he is also very good to his fans, Ive met him a few times and Ive always come away with a great feeling. For someone who writes such creepy books hes quite a nice guy. If you dont believe me ask Synnove. I know a few of you have recieved a copy of one of his books from me and it would be nice to hear your thoughts.

Barca Boy is right. John Connolly is a superb human being and a great author. I think The Book of Lost Things was a great introduction to his work.

I got to meet him last Friday and he was so likable, I just wanted to hang out with him during the rest of his time in Houston. I talked to him about the Cult and he said his wife was a big Chuck fan and had considered joining us here. It was great to hear him at the reading and meet him for a while.

Certainly something to put on your 'to read' list.

I loved this book! I also recieved a copy courtesy of Barca Boy (along with some great Irish candy!).

This was a fantastic read. I was worried it might Harry Potter-esque (I'm not a fan), but I was happily surprised that it was beautifully and thoughtfully written. I was always a huge reader of the fairy tales as a kid and this book really connected me with how I discovered reading. I'm really amazed how an "adult" fairy tale could work so well, I thought it was a pleasure I could never return to as an adult.

I loved this book for the same reason I loved The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Both visit parable in a unique way to explore the passage from not so innocent childhood to early adulthood. Both gave me the chills and both made me nostalgic in the best possible way. Kind of meloncholy, but reflective too.

I'm so disapointed I missed his recent US tour. I could have seen him on the 19th of this month just 10 minutes away. Next year.

I really like his writing style too so I'm ready to jump into one of his thrillers next.

Thanks again, Derek! One of my favorite books this year.

I never heard of him.....until BarcaBoy sent me one of his books. Thanks to NWA and SJC sucking so bad....I had the opportunity to get 1/3 of the way through. I'll be picking up all his other books soon.
Thanks for the great read Derek.
(also, the books from our joint auction arrived today. Another great tip Derek!)

From The Irish Independent.

Irish Author's novel about gruesome fairytale world is to become a movie

A dark fantasy novel by bestselling Irish author is to be made into a film.
The Book Of Lost Things tells the story of an English boy who enters a gruesome fairytale world and must find a way out of it. It was published last year and it was reported that Irish director John Moore has optioned the film rights.

yesterday I was lurking in a used booksore english section (as usual) and I found a copy of the book of lost things. I read the backcover description and seemed pretty interesting, and the name of the guy rang a bell on the back on my head, nevertheless since I have like 7 books piled up that I have to read, I leave it on the shelf, even when it was really cheap. When I return and search the forum in order to see if someone know him I stumble on this thread, and I thought "hey! Barca recommends it... and I leave it on the shelf of that place free to anyone to buy it?!?!". Terror struck me! I made up a nice excuse in order to get out of work,(since I work most of the time on the street) run to the bookstore hoping that it was still there. There was a "moby dick" copy too (with a glossary of nautical terms, and ship descriptions, pretty interesting) I grabbed the two books and tried to get a discount on them, but since the bookstore guy refused to give me one, I only bought "The Book of lost things", As soon as I finish "Cat´s Cradle" by Vonnegut I will start this one.
Now Im on doubt about one thing. sorry to get off topic but Should I buy "Moby Dick" or "Timbuktu" by Paul Auster? (or none of them, since I don´t feel very attracted to them)

I was flipping though the pages of "The book of lost things" and I noticed that it contains a big appendix that includes the original fairy tales in wich the book is supposed to be based on, as well as their origins.
Should I read all the original tales before going into the book? Some of them I do know and some are new to me. Do I need to know them in order to enjoy the book? will they spoil me something?

Its up to you, in the original version that appendix of fairytales wasn't in it. I say go ahead and read it and if you enjoy it read the Appendix. Let us know how you got on with it.

When Derek sent me The Book Of Lost Things it looked so intriguing that I picked it up right away and didn't put it down until I was done with the story. It is one of my all time favorites now.

I have read most of the Appendix, and I will read the rest, and I must say that it is very interesting. I learned quite a bit about the fairy tales I've read through so far.

I would love to read some more of Connolly's work. The next time I'm at the library I'm going to look him up. I'd also like to send him a fan letter, because I loved TBOLT so very much.

I LOVED the Appendix. I was so not ready to have the book be over so I really enjoyed reading that. I also rediscovered a lot of fairy tales that I had read so differently as a kid.

Connolly's other books are thrillers. I read a couple that Barca was kind enough to send me. Though well written, and I like thrillers, these were too dark for me. I've become a wuss.

The BOOK of LOST THINGS is just brilliant. I look forward to reading it again.

I lent the book you sent me to my sister derek.  I told her it was "cute" teehee.

I do think she'll like it though, and she needs to read stuff other than textbooks. The last nonschool book she read was The Hole, and I lent her that one too. In fact she never gave it back, even though she said she didn't really like it. I think I want it back actually.

(The other one is some real estate guy and I got quite confused. It's worth checking out for his picture though, he looks so happy.)

I'll let you know if I'm going and we can embroider a special "Connolly Banner" for the great woman.

It is Jennifer Connolly we're going to see, right?

Actually, apparently I might be going to The Great Escape festival in Brighton that day, but I've yet to see proof that my mate's got tickets, the little bugger. But if not, Connolly it is!
