I read an interview talking about Rant (which I have not read) which states that it is, in part, about a gang of teen car-crash enthusiasts who crash into each other to feel alive. Now why does this sound as if it is ripped off WHOLESALE from this book (which came out in the fucking SEVENTIES!):

http://www.amazon.com/Crash-Novel-J-G-Ballard/dp/0312420331/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-2536474-5297662?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179263882&sr=1-2

I know Palahniuk is ludicrously compared to Ballard, but they're poles apart and Ballard is a FAR better writer/theoretician. And I know Palahniuk harvests his psychofantic fans for stories for his books so he doesn't have to make up his own ideas. But does he have to be such a BLATANT rip-off merchant?

Get a clue, Palahniuk. Invent something. That's what writers with imagination DO.

Movie?

I have read the book of Crash, and corresponded with JG Ballard, but apart from that....actually, yes, I did see the Cronenberg movie. So?

You fans really can't handle when it's pointed out the guy is ripping other people off, can you?

Most of us are quite aware that Chuck uses ideas that are not his own. What is annoying is that social irritants such as yourself adopt these silly belligerent stances and get defensive as soon as the regular posters here "gang up" on you.

yeah but how close is rant to crash, stealing ideas is one thing but not an entire theme.

I'm not defending Chuck.
I'm responding to this purposely provocative little nugget:

Hahahahaha...

'social irritants such as yourself'...I love the condescension implicit in that crap...that is genuinely HILARIOUS. Wouldn't Chucky like to be called a 'social irritant'? I regard myself as an ANTI-social irritant, thank you very much! But apart from that, I am a Chuck fan gone bad (followed him from Fight Club to Haunted) and now the guy just annoys me because he seems to have bought into his own hype. Plus his writing is now shite. He IS ripping other people off; plain facts of the matter. And the words 'in part' in my first post address the fact the whole book is not about Crash-like stuff. Thanks for your (in)attention.

His writing was always "shite", and the condescension isn't implicit, it's pretty damn obvious. Look carefully and you'll see that many of us find his recent stuff unimpressive, just the way you do.

funny. how many times has every movie and novel been already done and done and done. but I didn’t see you here when haunted released. why weren’t you netbanging for chaucer ?

what's funny is that ballard is a fan of chuck's as well. and don delillo's a fan, even hit up dennis that his books weren't on the similar-to-chuck recommends page. and hey, hemingway went after all of his favorite authors, flaubert and stendhal included, writing similar stories to bring about his own love for the story. i guess youve never had influences ?

youre like one of those kids who want to sue chuck for stealing the idea of fight clubs and making money off of it.. misguided and insinuative, so that others will listen to you. an attention getter, smoke and mirrors, a jaded and false illusionist. I'm all about pointing something out, but to downright thrust a scathing opinion about another man's art shows that you quite possibly have none of your own.

Fun facts: Hamlet was based of an older play with the exact same storyline. Shakespeare changed the name from Amleth to Hamlet, after reading about the story in a book.

Joyce's Ulysses adopts the structure of Homer's Odyssey, and modern critics have given his (untitled) chapters the same names as those given in the epic poem.

Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea is considered a modern masterpiece, yet is very closely linked to Jane Eyre, even using the same characters and writing from a different perspective.

A: I've read Crash. It's really not like Rant at all.
In Crash the main character is involved in a wreck and spends 90% of the novel trapped in what's basically a giant median. The reviews and such will claim some kind of sexual side to it, but that's digging a rape scene out of a pig murder.

B: Why is everyone so excited about things being original? It seems like a lot of people out there value originality over all other things. If originality was what made something good then Moulin Rouge would be the best movie ever.

I bolded that point up there.

Everyone's free to like or not like something. Everyone's free to criticize, to complain, all that fun stuff.

But read the work you want to criticize before you pass judgement. Otherwise you sound like an asshole.

What an asshat.

Read before accusing an author of plagiarism. It will save you from being wrong on multiple accounts, and (at least temporarily) from sounding like a moron.

have you guys read these books and seen these movies? rant and either crash are REMOTELY related - they involve crashing - that's about it

in rant they crash as a form of a "night" behavior, a social activity they do apart from the "days" who live more normal lives - it isn't about sex, or getting of, nor is it a study of racism in today's society

crash 2005: A raw and unsettling morality piece on modern angst and urban disconnect, Crash examines the dangers of bigotry and xenophobia in the lives of interconnected Angelenos.

crash 1996: This dark, moody, erotically-charged film examines the theme of sexual fetishes, and their impact on one's life.

These three are VERY DIFFERENT. Do some research you guys before you spout off.

don't think so - please explain? i thought i was very clear in showing that aside from crashing cars, they are three very different stories

why don't we just compare bumper cars, the indy 500 and my commute to work every day - YES, they all involve CARS

honestly, all i really remember is an injured dude wallowing in the tall grass and he met a woman and some big mutant and he was having a spot of bother getting away.

and I guess I don't really see the connection to Rant other than the idea of automobile accidents being non accidental. i didn't feel that sexual component in Rant. the idea seemed to be to meet other people with party crashing, not cum in your pants or meet people and have sex with them.

Ultimately in Rant, car crashing ended up being a means of time travel/attaining immortality...pretty sure Rant is the only work in question that features time travel.

There was also a clear reason given for why it started...government traffic agents crashing cars to research the effects of rubbernecking on traffic. Was that an element of the other stories?

Or the reasons it perpetuated...because it was a common/social experience that the oppressed nighttimers could share. and later because the night timers were unable to boost peaks due to rabies...so party crashing was something real that they could do in a world where most fun was manufactured and artificial.

etc etc...

HEY! he´s got a point. Chuck rip offs are obvious to the superior intelect
- Fight Club was a "Rocky" Rip off
- Invisible Monsters is a "Priscilla Queen of the desert" rip off (tranvestite on the road... it´s been done)
- Survivor was clearly an "Alive" rip off.
- Haunted.. I have seen all that happends there in "Big brother"
- Diary... he didnt even write that one! he just stole it from some Nora Adams

It´s not the story what matters... it´s how it is told. The story is an accesory in order to transmit ideas. And chuck has a unique ways of telling us storys, and even a better one in how to transmit his ideas. That´s the thing that really matters to me.

Naw i actually did stuff when i was a kid, thats why although I enjoyed chucks first few books they weren't no new thing, not to me, but nonetheless a good thing if you need to be made aware of what matters and what doesn't, in a fun and entertaining format! Anyone over 15 who doesn't know they aren't their clothes and their toaster and that they need to hurt to feel is a bit of a silly ass-ass though eh?
