Hey guys,

In our latest news update here Chuck drops the awesome news during his Chicago Book Fair reading that Survivor is back on the slate for production.

It seems the team that's behind the new Keanu Reeves movie "Constantine," an adaptation of the graphic novel series "Hellblazer" are getting Survivor into production as soon as they can.

So stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, discuss, discuss, discuss!

Let me just quickly say that I'm in love. Thank gosh for these people taking the chance on Survivor. Whole time I was reading the book I was thinking, wow, if they made a movie addaptation that was as close to the book as Fight Club the movie was, this could be fantastic.

Life is gravy.

im really excited to be able to watch the scene of Fertility and Tender dancing in the department store, while its burning around them. It reminds me so much of Jack and Marla, at the end of Fight Club, except they're dancing.
I must say that one adaptation of the cemetary scene by the college crew was excellent as well.

I wonder how they will end it all. Will the have the crash and die ending, or that hidden ending that posted a couple months ago?

they should have a really intense crash ending
but don't show inside the plane. make it ambiguous like the ending

i still wish lullaby was being made into a movie before any of his other books

I'm thrilled to hear that Survivor is being made into a movie. It appears that it would have great potential for a movie, even upon first reading it. However, there are plenty of great books that have been made into terrible movies. I just hope that isn't the case here.

*Spoilers*

At the Seattle reading Chuck said something like it looks like Survivor's fate is to be a movie and maybe now people will no longer think he dies in the end. I was surprised that he said this because that is a pretty big spoiler and if I had not read Survivor yet I would have been upset.

i havent read in a while but as i remember it wasnt explicit that he dies. its just implied that he probably will.

i like to think that he dies. i just hate how everyone has to have their main character live. it was just something different and not ENTIRELY depressing.

I wonder if I have it in me to tell people to kill themselves... I'd probably regret it forever, but on the other end I kinda feel like people who think about suicide won't actually do it if they're calling a hotline. If you want to die, you'll get it over with right? If you call a hotline, that means you want to be talked down, told everything's going to get better, and have your ego stroked a little bit right? Or maybe I'm way off, I don't want to offend anyone who is or has been suicidal. Try and love yourselves.

I told a friend to kill herself, once, but she never did.
Then my other friends called me a horrible monster for doing so, but I'm just always sick of people telling suicidal people that they should live. It seems selfish to me.

Survivor is chucks most visionery book. The Characters journey from being trapped inside a social bubble (the suicide cult), to escaping into the outside world (new york), only to be corrupted by greedy agents and hated by 'uninformed' people. will be another great potrayel of American society.

That's what people loved about Fight Club. And it's what they will love about this movie.

If Choke is also made into a film. Chuck could become A Legend.

I'd love to see bret ellis and Chuck write a Book together.......the 'tyler the psycho - when jack left tyler and tyler becomes patrick bateman scenario'

"Patrick Bateman: your an ugly f##king b##tch and i want to sell you soap!!!!"

Ugly Bartender: "join the club!"

Patrick bateman: "Club you say?"

hey man it would work!

I gotta say, if Chuck were to put down the pen (or whatever he uses) right now, he'd be considered a legend. And going back to earlier in the thread where somebody asked how it should end. I think it should end exactly as it did in the book, where the inidividual decides whether or not he lives, and how. I personally wasnt sure until I heard the "explanation" but then, I started thinking, "wait, the name of the book is SURVIROR"! Sure, you could go and say that it was just titled that because it centered around a group of survivors, however if that was why it was titled, then it would have been titled "Survivors" . . .multiple.

Hey, if they kill themselves, it's their own fault. I've told several people to do it. not to be mean or anything, but i don't know these people, life very well could be the worse thing to ever happen to em.

You never see this on television sitcoms. Nobody ever calls me when they're going to kill themselves. I always feel left out.

Ending

When I was reading Survivor I could picture this being made into a movie, unlike while reading Fight Club After finding out about the secret ending, which in my opinoin makes the book better, I thought a director could shoot the final scene by showing the plane explode, but have a voiceover of what Tender had recorded. Then show a group of people listening around the black box. This would allow the viewer to decide if Tender survived or not.

Kevin Spacey would make the pefect Tender. I think Ed Norton/Helena Bonham Carter would make a good Tender/Fertitliy combination, but it would draw to many Fight Club compairsons. Tender is Tender. Jack is Jack. Fertility is Fertitliy and Marla is Marla.

Pollux Troy?

I believe that he, Alessandro Nivola (courtesy of IMDb), would rock or Nicolas Cage even could be good.

Other possibilites:

Ed Norton (with a bullet, but then they'd think that he'd be a regular in a chuck movie)
Kevin Spacey
Matthew McConaughey
Or maybe even the guy who played Pervis in Alien Ressurrection? ;)

Kevin Smith always recycles actors; however, I think the Fight Club crew coming back again and again takes away from the individuality of each story. Negativo on a second Chuck Movie with F.C. actors.

That's interesting. I was thinking about that, and it does seem selfish, for the "loved ones" to try and talk them out of it. And I by no means encourage someone to kill themself, it's an awful thing. I'm just saying, if one really thinks about it, people don't want someone they love to be gone, even if that person if miserable. At the same time, things can, and usually do, get better. And please, no one freak out thinking I'm saying people should go kill themselves, it's just interesting to think that if someone is truly that unhappy, should people try to stop them?

As far as the movie news, I hope it all works out well. I hope they stick close to the book, at least for dialogue, because it worked so successfully for Fight Club. I'm very curious how the film makers will do the "transformation" of the character into the messiah status of being physically perfect.

Who's making the movie?

You say that the Constantine crew will working on it, but with what certainty do you say that?
A while ago there was talk that Spike Jonze was going to be in on making the movie, and on IMDB there is talk of a Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman film slated for 2005. Maybe this is just my little theory based solely on hope, but how kick-ass would that be if the two of them did Survivor?

I'd almost want Fincher back but this story isn't as dirt-in-your-nails gritty as Fincher thrives in.

Sometimes I think that the Norton-Pitt-Carter combo could work in most Chuck books.

Constantine

I must say that Constantinte sucked big time. It just came out here in Europe and I was so disappointed; the pace was slow and the story was a times not really coherent and confusing. Also did I find the end so overwhelmingly lamely-positive: I don't smoke anymore (yeah spoiler), I've understood the gift of life and bla-bla.
All this just to say that it ain't for certain that it's a good thing that this crew takes Survivor to the theaters.

With Constantine I knew what to expect, Keanu Reeves (DUDE!, excelent man totally, yo Bill!) being a one emotion dork and cool special effects.

Thats what I got, I just knew what to expect and I am happy.

The personification of Lucifer was well done.

ah, well and since Im not allowed to post on the choke board, I decided to ask my "german friend" to spread the word about the "Choke"-movie-news. It says filming will start in march, that Susan Sarandon will be in it and other gossip. I think we should take it with a grain of salt but I got excited nevertheless.

They should end it just like the book have the plane going down and have the camera outside the plane. Then you just hear testing, testing, one, two.... and cut. The end.

no way....they should end it with a dance number...actually leave the plane out all together....make it about a lonely man's journey to branson missouri where he falls in love with a cross dressing makeup artist and learns the true meaning of christmas...

i won't hold my breath, it was "supposed" to be extremely close to production a few years ago, back when there was talk on this site about Madonna playing Fertility and when the petition against its production orignally started.

its funny how everyone starts the music a little too soon.

If this thing really does go into production, the anticipation waiting for the movie is going to be unbearable. I imagine the first time watching "Survivor" the movie will be just as potent as the first time I experienced FC.

That being said, if they end that movie with him either living OR dying, I am going to be fucking IRATE. The ending of the book was beautiful, and it's not the business of whoever makes this movie to decide if Tender lives or dies. One of the great things about Survivor is that we were left to decide if Tender lived or not. When Fertility said that he would live did she mean literally, or did she mean metaphorically through his recording, or did she just say it to comfort him? That's what was so cool about it. We interpret the story and we "create" the ending as we see fit. I'm sure there are a lot of people who think he dies (like me), and a lot of people who think he lives. Regardless of which you are, if the movie ending is decisive, it's definitely going to piss a lot of people off.

I think the movie sould end just as the book did. Tender has his little monologue in voiceover, the final engine has burned out and we see the plane still high in the air, but plumeting, the the screen goes black and completely silent for two seconds, and then all we hear is "Testing, testing, one two...", roll credits.

I'm a Survivor and Bootylicious!

I will be the first to line up for ANY adaptation of Chuck's work but aside from Fight Club's director David Fincher how many Hollywood directors would be capable enough and have balls big enough to go forward and make a faithful adaptation?

Constantine seems like a lavish computer generated, masturbatory fantasy with demons and scary things like Keanu Reeves acting (shudder)

What I suggest is that “Lullaby” gets produced and the main character, Carl Streator, gets to off Matthew McConaughey and Nicholas cage and the rest of the demon spawn from Satan's sewer system. I know that's not in the book but it would become my Star Wars people!

Lullaby should be a movie adaptation that has no relation to the novel whats so ever. It can be a man in a purple jumpsuit with yellow racing stripes on it that wears a George Clinton plastic mask that stalks owners of meat produce companies and kills them with his culling song of Michael Jackson's in the closet. It should star Kevin Costner as Carl Streator, Gina Davis as that realtor girl and whomever else they want to cast....matt mcConaughey and Nicky Cage...pfft that is just stupid.
