Real Life Choking Game Turns Deadly

Ash choking in 'Evil Dead 2'Check out the below article about a real life choking game, turned deadly.  Props to Sean Anderson for this one:

THURSDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) -- At least 82 youths have died from playing the "choking game" since 1995, a new government report shows.

Also known as the "blackout game," "pass out game," "scarf game," "space monkey" and other monikers, the activity involves intentionally trying to strangle oneself or another with hands or some sort of noose to briefly achieve an euphoric state.

It sounds like autoerotic asphyxiation but less fun.

We used to do this in high school. Well, not me. But I remember one kid passing out and then going into spasms.

There wasn't a lot to do for fun where I grew up.

Don't tell me this might possibly hinder the release of Choke in theaters worldwide! Like the WTC did to Survivor.

I remember kids doing this in Jr. High. I was pretty sure they were faking it when they said they felt tingly and high.

it's a lot easier and safer to just do the put your forehead on the end of a baseball bat and spin around it till you fall down.

One of my friends' cousins died from this in high school, he left one week to go to the funeral out of state, and when he got back he told me what his cousin died from. I didn't quite believe it at first, but I didn't say anything either.

Why is it that Chuck's books have all these medical stats in them before the medical world does? Same with the articles about spider venom viagra popping up (no pun intended) after Rant.

I don't know if I'd really call this one of chuck's medical factoids. the only thing i could think to compare it to would be Choke which didn't really have anything to do with choking yourself to get high.

It hasn't got anything to do with Choke. Choking games are mentioned in 'Guts'.

i remeber this game from primary school, jesus at least 10 yeras ago. We used to call it an Ameerican dream. You hold your breath for 60 seconds and then take a big breath and hold it as someone pushes on your chest. Yeah we were passing out all over the place, dangerous shit.

I wouldn't even relate this to the novel Choke. This has been reported since '95 and about 82 people have died for it. I don't want to call it natural selection, but it seems fitting. The article didn't relate it to the novel either.

However - people act stupidly, and when there is something of similar content there will be attention brought to it, more stupidity resulting.  Might as well say Marilyn Manson and Led Zepellin made you shoot you school mates. And War of the Worlds definitly made you kill your children. As people have no control over themselves. Why not just do whippits in the back of the grocery store?

yeah, i know it does't relate to Choke. I was just saying maybe kinda obliquely it would as to warrant it being a News Item. I still don't really understand why it's on the front page of the site? But, yeah, I guess Guts would be more appropiate for it, even though that's more about auto-erotic asphyxiation.

yeah, we played it too around 10 years ago. you tried holding in your breath while someone was literally choking you with their hands around your neck or pressing down on your stomach. it never worked for me, i always gave up and started breathing before passing out. but we NEVER thought it could have any serious consequences. it was just a game.

I know kids who play it, but I've never heard about anything like that happening.  I tried it once, but it didn't work for me.

I think we can agree that this is in no way related to Choke:)

This has been going on since the beginning of time.  When I was in middle school, a police officer came to my class and talked to us about it, saying that he had a friend that died in the 70's from this, so it's nothing new and should have no effect on the movie.
