Questions for you guys
I'm putting in some stuff to keep out spammers and possible password hackers. The spam stuff is something you can never get rid of and can be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, but password hackers are another story. So, in an attempt to protect everyone's accounts, which of the following would you prefer?
- a CAPTCHA form when you log in, to verify you're a person (the thing with the goofy letter you have to type in)
- a password policy that requires a new password every X days
- a password policy that requires a few special things for instance: one capital letter, one number and one non-standard character
Next up is the text editor. I'm intending to switch over to a more "typical" text-editor for you all to use. Meaning it will essentially be a text-box with a handful of buttons that insert markup tags for you. Bold and Italics, for example.
Benefits include
- Easier to use
- Less javascript, less potential issues
- The firefox spellcheck will work
- potentially faster loading pages
- resizable text-area
Drawbacks include
- no what you see is what you get input (can still preview a post before submiting to see how it looks)
If you can provide me with your thoughts on these items, it would be much appreciated. We have a lot of stuff in the works for the near future, so I'm trying to lay the groundwork.
I honestly don't care if someone hacks my cult password and am sick of having to come up with 20 different passwords for different log ins due to the different requirements of various websites. at least 6 letters, at least 8 letters, at least this many letters and one number at least this many letters and two numbers. I use the same, simple six letter password for this site that I have been using for everthing that will let me since the 7th grade. Anyway, I kno other people will feel differently abou this issue... That being said, I still doing like any of the options given.
My bank does something that I don't really mind so much, it has you set up a security question and it asks you to answer it only if you log in from a different computer. Of course this would probably be annoying for people who log in both at home and at work.
Anyway, has a cult account ever been hacked?

We've had a few accounts hacked, and every now and again I'll notice someone who is clearly a bot trying lo log in on a random account. It's not a huge issue, I'd just rather deal with it prior to it happening. If the general opinion is to not bother, I won't.
and wouldn't it be great if we still had polls for things like this?!

I prefer this option:

The odds are pretty good I would forget my password if I had to change it every few days. and I know some people can't use the CAPTCHA for whatever reason. My husband had to turn it off on his blog because some people couldn't leave comments. Now he just has to approve comment and filter spam manually.
I'd be okay with a CAPTCHA thing (although mostly i just think they're annoying), and the third, more complex password option works for me, but I'd also be okay with not bothering. Definitely not something requiring a new password every X days. that would wreak havoc on my memory banks.
I'm all for the new text box. This one still doesn't quite work as a WYSIWYG anyway, spacing can still be wonky, and changing font size with the drop down menu doesn't work, among other things.
I can say that I have some stuff on our test server that will show up here probably this weekend. Some of which you'll see some of which is behind the scenes. Mostly minor updates/changes.
We have some other stuff that is much bigger in progress that will show up once it's done, but is coming along nicely. For these items, I'll be contacting some members to take a look at in a few weeks (hopefully).
Based on my current schedule, you'll probably be noticing changes of some sort every week or 2.

And by "some people", she means me. I can't hardly read them, it takes me an average of five tries to type them correctly.
Also I cannot do Magic Eye things. :(
Everything you mentioned about the text editor sounds great, like steps in the right direction. I'm completely okay with the preview-before-you-post option if it comes with those benefits.
And I don't know about the passwords. I think the second option would be the least irritating, though. I loathe CAPTCHA.
I have a lot of trouble reading the latest version of CAPTCHA (the one that warps the letters). However, if it's a simple two word captcha (like craigslist uses - with REAL words, even!) I'd be for that before anything else. Otherwise, I prefer the 2 digits, mixed case, 1 non-standard character deal.
