This is the thread to post all your the bugs, annoyances, and tweaks you've noticed and think the site needs fixing on.  Only talk about speed issues here if you have suggestions for us to fix them.  And feel free to nitpick here, but just don't point out shit like, "I don't like Chuck's face on the header.  Can we fix that?"

You know the drill.  List away!

so far, i'm lovin' the shout box and that it stays in the left frame regardless of where you navigate on the site.  however, the text should clear after it's been "shouted".  also, is the refresh rate adjustable, or is that just a general speed issue?

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

I all ready e-mailed about a couple of these things, but since no one has posted here, I will.  I know you are aware of some of them, but I'll post them anyway.

1.  The white on white quoting

2.  There isn't a way, that I've found to go straight to the newest post.

3.  The only way to get to the end of the thread is to click on the thread, scroll all the way down, and hit last.

4.  The New Posts section looks.. funny, and it doesn't say who the last poster in the thread was.

5.  In the Art Portraits gallery only the first page of thumbnails is viewable, the links to the other pages don't work.  The only way to see all of the images is to click through them one by one.  I haven't checked out the other parts of the gallery, so I don't know about those.

6.  This is just an aesthetic and maybe a picky thing, but all that stuff being on the left side of the page bugs the crap out of me.  I can get used to it, but I'm just wondering whether or not I'm the only one.

7.  Where is the user CP?  Is the only way to find it by going to your own profile?

8.  After posting in a thread it takes you back to the first page instead of taking you to your post. (Edit: it doesn't seem to be doing that anymore, I haven't really been on since it first came up, so some of these things may be fixed)

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head... I hope this list doesn't sound whiny or bitchy.  You asked, so I'm posting!

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

Scribbling,

1.  The white on white quoting - Kirk is working on this
2.  There isn't a way, that I've found to go straight to the newest post.  - This will take longer.  It's a forum patch we need still.
3.  The only way to get to the end of the thread is to click on the thread, scroll all the way down, and hit last. - Same
4.  The New Posts section looks.. funny, and it doesn't say who the last poster in the thread was. - Not sure what you mean?  The News Posts are no longer handled in the Forum.  It's a separate feature called 'Articles'.  (sort of like Blog comments)
5.  In the Art Portraits gallery only the first page of thumbnails is viewable, the links to the other pages don't work.  The only way to see all of the images is to click through them one by one.  I haven't checked out the other parts of the gallery, so I don't know about those. - This works now.  Hooray for Clayton!
6.  This is just an aesthetic and maybe a picky thing, but all that stuff being on the left side of the page bugs the crap out of me.  I can get used to it, but I'm just wondering whether or not I'm the only one. - I love it  And I'd have more there if I didn't think it would blow up the site.  Anyone else?
7.  Where is the user CP?  Is the only way to find it by going to your own profile? - Yep, your profile is your new headquarters.
8.  After posting in a thread it takes you back to the first page instead of taking you to your post. - Yes, this is lame.  We need a forum patch for that guy too.

1. favicon.ico

2. adapting to a non-vBulletin board is tough man.  That was a golden app.  Umm...

3. the shoutbox thing is cool.

4. Now that the site is faster maybe I'll pound around and actually compile some things - if you really want.

initial taste: cluttery, way more ads, core functionality has gotten worse for the sake of some bells and whistles.  i know you need to at least generate a sustainable site (revenue) though, but hey, Drupal does have a donation mod.

*tries to keep an open mind*

run with it man.

I'm talking about when you just click on "New Posts."  Thats what I always did on the old site, I rarely just clicked on the individual forum

Its not the stuff itself that bothers me, but  the fact that its on the left of the page.  Its that whole reading left to right thing and having what I actually want to read three inches away from the left.  Does that make more sense?

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

first off, great site. love the lay-out. I love the new essay, and already looking forward to the next one.

I have three things comments:

1: The intensives are gone or the few threads that are there are open for everybody which is not cool, because these threads happened in private and must stay that way. I personally am not affected by this, but if I was, I wouldn't like it.

2: Where is the writer's resource page? It is coming back right? My opinion is that it should, because it is great.

3: Where can I put out these annoying dutch advertisements? I really don't want a ringtone from mariah carey. Premium members shouldn't be troubled by these, right?

thanks everybody for the hard work. you have no idea how much I owe to this site.

Greetings,

Bateman.

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

im still trying to take everything in.  initially i disliked everything about the site except the new banner at the top of the site.  since yesterday almost everythings grown on me, so i chalk that all up to just getting used to something new (though i still think the green is better).

mel actually pointed out all the bugs i noticed, so i wont repeat.

i dig the shoutbox.   i love the new graphic at the top of the site.  i suspect i will probably use the blog feature and i can see it becoming  a pretty cool and widely used site feature.

i borderline despise the new forum.  thats the one thing i will never get used to...vBulletin is just superior :(

that said, thanks guys for putting so much time and effort into all this!!

NOW HURRY UP AND GET THOSE NEW PROMO BANNERS MADE SO I CAN PUT IT ON MY MYSPACE!

opp, thought of another. What about at the top of the page next to Forum, New Posts, and Help, can we get a Who's Online thing? That was handy.

That's the only thing that's been really bugging me.  Otherwise I really like how the site looks now.

The Chat is working, all.  You just need to trick Drupal into letting you in.  To do this, just reset your Password in your profile.  You don't even have to reset it to something different.  Just reset, then retype in the same ol' password.  And it will let you in.  Thag proved that it works.  Yay for Thag.

I'm keen to sign up for a premium account, however the store requires a postal address and only offers usa & canada as country options. Any suggestions for those of us in the rest of the world?

ps: moving to north america is not an option for me at the moment ;)

I tried to look at the Writer's Workshop tonight. I went to check submissions, then slected browse all and got the following error message:

  • user warning: Unknown column 'n.nid' in 'on clause' query: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM drupal_ww_submission n INNER JOIN drupal_node_access na ON na.nid = n.nid WHERE (na.grant_view >= 1 AND ((na.gid = 0 AND na.realm = 'all') OR (na.gid = 1013744 AND na.realm = 'content_access_author') OR (na.gid = 2 AND na.realm = 'content_access_rid') OR (na.gid = 1000047 AND na.realm = 'content_access_rid') OR (na.gid = 0 AND na.realm = 'og_public') OR (na.gid = 2 AND na.realm = 'forum_access') OR (na.gid = 1000047 AND na.realm = 'forum_access'))) AND ( visible='1' and reviewable='1' ) in /home/chuckpal/public_html/includes/database.mysql.inc on line 172.

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

Hey guys,

Just checking in to thank you for all posting these bugs.  Please keep them coming.  You're finding some vital ones.

And non-US and Canada users, do not worry.  Fixing the Memberships on the store is our first priority, so you can all view those awesome archived essays from Chuck.  I also heard we have some bugs with the CAPTCHA image on the Registration page.

The timing was sort of screwy, as Kirk got thrown into a road trip business meeting his first day back in the office, post Holiday.  He's actually, right now, driving back to Elgin, from Milwaukee and will probably be crashing as soon as he finally gets home.  He's said though that tomorrow at the office will be more normal, and both he and Clayton will have more time to begin fixing all the immediate bugs.

So yeah, keep them coming.  And thank you for your patience. In a week or two, this website is going to kick ass again.

ps
And the Shoutbox is not meant to be that slow.  So if you think that thing is fun now, wait till you see how fast it's supposed to operate. ::evil grin:: Soon.  Soon...

I don't know where else to post this and it's definitely something WAY down the list to worry about, but that one cat that did the awesome drawings of Rant and Echo needs to be in the Fan Art section.

When I go to my profile and click on "Michigan" to see other users from Michigan - It shows everybody's name like 9 -10 times.  It looks funny because it's the same name over and over until you get to the next one...

I agree, he was like a professional artístuo though.

Anyway, from me:

I've just updated my user title, so I guess I'll see if that thing works. I really like the layout of this place, though yeah, no doubt it'll take some getting used to. I <strike>like</strike> <b>love</b> that we're using html links now, if they're working, it makes copy-pasting things lots easier. The youtube and google video links automatic conversion things just sound awesome. My problem, and I'm sure it's not a biggie, but the apostraphe's in the Chuck Essays have been replaced by little boxes. I don't know much about these things, but I'm assuming that's easy to fix. â¯â¯

Apart from the fact that it's too cluttered, the design is pretty nice.  Thanks a lot for all your hard work, dudes.

This is incredibly tiny, but unmentioned so far.  Are we unable to have more than one space between lines?  It's a small issue, but It'd be nice to be able separate out paragraphs with an extra space if I could.

I don't know if this is an issue to bring up in this forum, but does anyone know when the fanmail window was open? All the site says is that it is now closed as of January 2008?

Any feedback would be appriciated, thank you.

Hello Admiral,

It will take a little time to get used to this new ship, but it should be all right. Thanks for everything.

Problems :

1- The old groups have completely disappeared. You know, Sports Talk, etc. It seems they didn't make the trip.

2- The Who's online list : we can only see the latest 10 members, not the whole bunch.

3- I don't know who came up with this "your life is dull and pointless" crap, but he/she deserve a kick in the teeth.

4- There is no way to see who is in the chatroom(s) before entering.

that was an admin having a little venting fun and it probably wont be here for long, not til someone gets around to writing the official script for it, that sort of thing

i do hope a box is crafted to show who's in the chat without having to enter

night.. at them moment, admin create groups and we'll have to request them. they arent available yet. im looking forward to them as well.

as for the myspace collection slash buddy list, ive an idea, an eye candy idea..

i love how the avatars show for your buddies, but it only shows the avas of the first four or five and then just names and a buttom for "more", and on the next page: just names, no more beautiful avas

is this a glitch, or is it supposed to be that way: i would love to see all the avas of the buddy pages.

also.. workshop.. we'll get back to that in a few days. most of the things i mention are probably already in the motion of being patched

one love

I guess that's what I get for going back to work, then having to make a brief trip out of town all when this went down.

I still have to read through all this, but thanks to everyone for their patience, and for pointing out anything that seems off :)

a couple other things i've noticed...

it seems that you can't copy and paste anything into the message box? it had a little pop up screen where I had to paste into there to get it to work?

also, is anyone else noticing their avatars being resized to the 120x120? This one should be 87X120, I've tried it like 4 times now and it always seems to get stretched out.

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

NOT A GLITCH ..

This isn’t an immediate nec or anything, just an idea:

Forum idea, not that yaw don’t have enough of your own, but this just occurred to me as maybe a perfect little addition:

Instead of one link on the top just above the forum that reads Post New Forum Topic, there is a row of three choices, left to right:

The choice to the left reads:

• Post New Forum Topic

And to the right of that, or middle length of the page (or forum header):

• View New Posts

And to the right of that (the right side of the page):

• View New Threads

And the posts will show up cascading down in chronological order by the threads like before

the name of the thread – the thread starter (member name) with a little green arrow – and the last to post (member name) with a little green arrow taking you to that last post

And as for the View New Threads.. same presentation, to see what’s being discussed without having to worry about how many people have posted in the passed hour or whatever

Forgive me, just some ideas I wanted to take the time to get down

I intensely dislike the little titles on every single post. Like the one here that says Re: THe Official 'Kirk List'. And then if you clear the box, it just puts the first couple of words of your post in there instead. Is there some way to change that?

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

Jane, this is something I wrestled with...  For administrative purposes, I need each comment to have a title.  I didn't like it being the first few words you typed in, so I stuck in a default.  This allows people to change it to something different, if they choose.

I considered hiding the titles, so you wouldn't see them, but they are still there, but then that doesn't allow users to enter one of their choosing.

So at the very least, it will remain in the form that you use to reply.  However, I will try a few different formatting issues so that hopefully they won't distract you so much when reading a thread.   But just FYI, this is towards the bottom of my current list of priorities.

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

The groups I'm wondering about, also, what's the deal with blogs, are we free to use them for whatever? And if I didn't say so before, I am enamoured with the new site. I think it's fantastic once some small kinks are worked out. Most of the things I dislike are little pedantic things, I'm not mentioning them in case it's just that I'm not used to them, rather than I dislike them. The comment box at the bottom of the page for example. I'm not used to it, but I don't dislike it, and it's certainly more useful.

corellion, I don't want to step out of place here since I'm not the policy maker, but you are free to use blogs for anything you want that is within the confines of our general site policies.  IE: no attacking members or racism... That sort of stuff.

Groups are something I really like, though we have obviously been a little forgetful in terms of documentation.  I'll clear this up later today in a blog post.  I'll also set up a demo group that anyone can join or look at, to see how they function.

Oh, also. The reason it wasn't working for me earlier I found out. The forum and such need to be accessed through the chuckpalahniuk.net domain, the writerscult.com and surely the Dennis one wouldn't work. FYI. Again, thank you. Delighted with this stuff, especially seeing how college is an utter bastard of recent.

Testing the edit here, and that's awesome Kirk, thank you!

I think after all that discussion I'll keep this username.

Oh, also, very important. Can we please have a currently reading display like underneath our avatars? It would promote literacy levels and it'd be cool and all sorts. Also, how do we go about making the text in our signatures smaller?

Re: The Official 'Kirk List'

I was just trying to find a user to look at their profile and... well I can't seem to figure out how to do that.  The advanced search doesn't seem to have a search by username option and I can't find a member list.  Am I missing something?

Also, whats with this buddy thing, how do you add someone as a buddy?

1.  When you search, you'll see 3 tabs above the results.  One of which will be users, click that and you should find who you're looking for.

2. On their profile there is a Click to ad buddy link.  Or, you can click (Add) next to someone's name.  Like mine.

I don't see (add) next to anyones name, and I don't see an add buddy link on any profiles.  Am I blind or what?

I really really like this idea.  Seconded and stuff.

Also:  Will we be able to eventually have not only the Who's Online thing, but also some sort of symbol on their posts that says whether they're logged on or not?  I miss that.

Can there be a place that shows the mods how to do the things that they are supposed to be doing?

Because I can't figure out how to do anything...
