Forum Optimization Updates and Suggestions
This is the thread where we will be updating you with forum improvements.
This is also the thread where we welcome your suggestions about features you miss from vBulletin and/or features you would like to see added to the forums in general.
If you want to report a glitch in the forum, or a problem with the website, please use the Kirk Fix List thread.
So what we have slated for immediate attention to be completed by the end of this week:
- Who's Online
- A Memberlist
- Who posted last, not just the post time. This will be clickable and bring you to the last post.
- Update profile fields: "Find more posts by so&so" and "Find all started threads by so&so".
- Posting should bring you to the end of the thread again, not the first page.
- The initial post of a thread will not show up on each page, just the first page.
- Thread navigation will show up at the top of a thread. The "1.2.3,4 last" feature. So you do not have to open a thread, scroll to the bottom and click last to get to the last page.
I know Invisible mode is a sorely missed feature by many, but at this time we don't know if it is feasible. We'll keep trying to get this back.
IMPORTANT: Users who are not logged into the site are on a ten minute lag in terms of seeing updated content including news and forum posts. This is how Drupal caches and changing it would cause performance issues for the website...

I'd amend PA's comment by saying I DO like the new forum topics, as it's good to see what's comign up, but maybe also have a "Hot topics" list that shows the threads that are getting hammered with replies? Or, just a new posts thing, i guess, if you can't stand the adventure.

there's a new posts button at the top of the page!

I think monkeywright should bring back sad pirate monkey avatar.
Can the mods make that happen.
Also, is there a way to bring back the ability to have your mouse hover over a thread title and see a preview of what the Original Post is? That was a simple-but-nice feature.

Perhaps far too geeky, but it would be fun to have twitter links in our profiles ... maybe?

All right, dammit, I've seen enough:
We MUST fix the one-word thread titles. I don't know if we need to redirrect noobs to "the rules" after they sign up, or put a notice near the subject bar, but in the past few days, I've seen:
"Hi!"
"Wow"
"Hello"
"helllllllooo"
As thread topics. The madness must cease. The line must be drawn Here! No further!

I don't like to complain about user created artwork for the site, but can we please get rid of this one? http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/gallery/v/?g2_itemId=11725
It's the most awful thing I've ever seen and i hate it when it keeps popping up in the random image box.

That picture is the Antichrist to a penis.[br][br][br]
Does that make it the Antipenis?[br][br]
I'm sooooo copywriting that word just in case it takes off.

Can you seriously copyright new words?

Actually, I don't know and I didn't bother to look it up before making this post. But I do think you can trademark a phrase. [br][br]
The wrestling announcer, Michael Buffer, got a TM for his phrase, "Let's get ready to rumble". And Trump did the same for "You're Fired".[br][br]
So maybe I should have stated that I'm sooooo trademarking Antipenis if it takes off.[br][br]
Then again, there's probably no need to worry about that.

I'd like to know what is going on with the search
is it working the way you intended it to?
because I have a hell of a time using it successfully, specifically using it to locate old posts
i had this problem a little while ago, searching a link on another author's site. an author i respect linked a post i made back in oh-four, a short review of his book. i never knew about this link or the fact that he ever had a website until i searched it out a few days ago and found a link to a post-review here at the cult. turns out i wrote that post but, as i found out from kirk, that thread was shedded during the site merge because it was so stagnant for so long
so, when searching for old posts, take into consideration that if those posts didnt receive much attention for a long period of time, it just may no longer be a part of the cult.
-is there a way we could archive posts from say 2005 and prior so that they could be an inactive but still searchable part of the community ?
thanks

seems to me that none of the changes we have hoped for have been made. Not only that, but the folks in charge have not been around to update us on what is going on. Are any of these changes in the works? Is there any point in even sticking around and hoping for them?
I'm starting to wonder if all is lost and it is time to move on. I mean, we were told there would be chat mods within a week... about.... two months ago. We got our page link at the top of the first page, but thats.... well, thats about it. What is going on around here?

Hey guys,
Sorry we've kept you all in the dark for the past few months. So let me take this time to update you on what we're doing to fix some of the problems around here.
Let me start by saying that, we have not forgotten about all the proposed changes, and that many of them are in the works as we speak, or were already being worked on, before we hit a wall.
As you may remember, we hired someone to code all the new Forum fixes:
See last post
Memberlist
Who's Online
Invisible Mode
Jump to last page
Who posted last
Some of these above features have even made it onto the site. But the person we hired grossly miscalculated his original estimate, and what was originally supposed to take 4-6 hours for him, dragged into 4-6 weeks! In the end, we parted ways with him, with not even a third of the work done. And the features we DO have done, aren't even fully polished yet.
During this 4-6 weeks, Kirk (our site programmer) took a much needed break. I'm sure Kirk will jump in here and tell his side of the story, but let's just say a combination of new clients at work, a serious flu, and massive site burnout left him out of commission during the time we were working with the Drupal expert to update the forums.
Kirk and I had a good conversation yesterday about how best for him to return to working on the site and catching up on the Fix List, as well as all the promised Forum fixes. We're both gung ho to get rolling on this, but it's not going to be easy. It's not just the Forum that needs attention. Constant unforeseen updates to our server have thrown some of our code out of whack. This resulted in the Gallery getting broken again (to where you can't navigate to Page 2!).
So Kirk has proposed a plan where, he'll attack specific sections of the site, one by one. Rather then getting frazzled with the prospect of jumping from page to page... feature to feature...bug to bug. He'll start with the priority issues. Situations where, something is preventing a person from basic functionality on the site (such as the Gallery bug). He'll then most likely move onto the Forums and pick up where the guy we had hired left off. It's not going to be easy though. Drupal is great, but it's very different from VB. And it's sometimes very difficult to tweak and customize it's core.
I just wanted to let you all know that we haven't forgotten any of this. Mirka and I spend hours and hours talking about the website every week. We have an unofficial deadline in that, 'Snuff' is coming out in May, and our traffic will probably double around that time. So we'll need to have everything updated and ironed out by then.
So stay with us. And continue to point out any new or older bugs you found/remembered.
Thanks for the patience.
.

thank you for the update, den. we all know that setbacks happen but over time concerns tend to rise
i cant wait to navigate through the workshops without the constant static of a headache and uncertinty. i really miss the place.

Glad to hear from you Dennis and Mirka, it will be great when its done.
Dark past, bright future, living abroad, well read. You're like the reincarnation of James Dean, hopefully with better driving skills ( Tomstrong on me, best compliment I ever got! )
Can you make is so that on the "New Post" page, instead of it listing as "Forum Topic" it says the actual forum its from? There are threads that say "new review *Spoilers*" but i dont know what they're spoiling with out reading it and getting spoiled.
also, on the formatting topic, would it be possible to make the default "Formatted"? i forget most times to change it and then everything gets all wonky and messed up if i try to fix it.
you know how some days you read, and somedays you make a mad dash about the office in search of a new typewriter? today was a typewriter.
yeah, i agree . can the "tracker" (or "new posts") show the threads and have the forum "name" shown there on the threads too ?

scanning the comments above, i didn't notice html formatting but if it is there, i'm reiterating it.
if possible, add an option to edit/post comments using html. some tags like [strike] for instance can't be accessed from the RTF (?) default edit/post comment option. i know this makes it easier for people not familiar with html to format comments but some options like [strike] aren't accessible.
i'm using [] by the way because the site is wonky again and i'm actually editing in html which is kinda weird and prompted my comment in the first place or maybe you guys are already working on this.
testing strikethrough.
edit: it works in html mode. cool.
I really have no complaints, it seems like a good site. One little suggestion, though: could you set it up so that clicking on new replies ("43 new" etc. in the replies field under "new posts") takes you directly to the replies, instead of the beginning of a thread?
Thanks!

Oh my god, we have spent so much time and money trying to get that done! I believe it does that if the thread is only one page, as soon as it hits two, it stops working. Also the first post shouldn't show up on each page. Oh, and the thread navigation should be at the TOP of the page, not under the first post. Plus you can't quote the first post. There is a lot to be done, but we have to wait for upgrades it seems.
Off the top of my head
http://www.theonion.com
http://www.aintitcool.com
http://www.popsci.com
http://typophile.com
http://rockband.com
And many others that I'm sure you could find if you looked for them.
I have a ton of stuff in the pipline in our testing site that will be popping up here very soon, probably in waves and not all at once.

Hey Kirk, I think Nate is talking about a fully functioning forum. The rest of the site is awesome! You and Clay kicked butt on it and I know you are constantly tweaking and improving it. It's just the forums continue to be difficult to navigate.
How about giving me sticky and unsticky powers back in the book club...
Thats weird. I thought you were able to do that. Maybe Kirk has some insight because I have no idea why you can't anymore. You're still a mod when I look at your profile.
well
and i know peoples are tired of hearing me babble on about the shop
and den hasnt responded to any of my workshop pms in receint months
probably waiting on an answer to give
but i still cant download story submissions
from either the Recent Submissions box or the Browse All box in Find Submissions
and the reviews once written and submitted still lose all format so they turn into rambling line after line of thoughts consisting of letters and odd characters
and that kinda blows..

Typophile, who is linked above has a fully functioning forum that I really like. http://www.webmaster-forums.net has a nice one too.
JKabol, we have a huge workshop update that is nearly complete that not only solve all your problems, but does a lot of cool stuff. We'll be asking for some testers soon.
I'm checking them out Kirk, and my favorite is rockband.com so far and it's vb dammit! ;) I gotta go to work but I'll look at them more fully in the next couple of days and get some feedback for you. I took a quick look at the last one you posted and it seems all their threads are just one long page. I was trying to find the longer threads to see how they navigate. I think I have to register an account to see how it really works. Thanks for the links! I have renewed hope. :)
brother kirk. thanks, man. i hope that i can be helpful, though i'm about to be in the backwoods for ten days. i'm taking jen to meet my mom and the whole family there is taking off when we touch down in seattle on a trip to loomis, wa for a week of family camping. we leave here thursday afternoon and i'll be back online on the evening of the 24th

I'm pretty sure I can't do it. I just tried to mess with it and I can't figure it out. So either - I don't have that skill or I just can't figure it out...

whatever happened to mods... and chat mods?
etc. I'm not going to start up the broken record.
