What is the process to publish an article?

After writing something worth sending to a publisher or magazine, where do you start? Do you copyright your work first so no one steals it? This is all very new to me.

i think when you write anything you already have some sort of copyright on it. How strong a hold on one I don't really know. but if you're just sending things out to publishers for submission i think you'd be alright. If you got something that you think is gonna be like the next Star Wars or something though you might want to go ahead and get a copyright from the government for it. A cheap way to get one is to just send yourself a copy of whatever you wrote via certified mail and then just never open it.
