New and i need an opinion on my work ethic lol

Hey the name is Kyle Carson. I'm a aspiring screenwriter and eventually might be an aspiring novelist lol. Anyway the question or statement i got is more about my work ethic.

I have written four screenplays and i'm still 21, not to sound arogent cause trust me there not the greatist. I know with anything good work comes with time and practise. However i feel guilty because i don't write everyday. I more think of an idea and write tell i run out of gas. However i always try to finnish what i start wither i think it's good or bad. Like most writers i have discouragement when i reach something new or try to tell i story that i know needs more research. When i finnish a first draft i only let one person read it and then i save it to a floppy disk and then throw it in a box and forget about it. Tell eventually i remember that story and wonder what it was about and read it with new eyes. Fix the problems and then save it put it back in a box and then send the revise version to another person. Most of my friends tell me i'm a genuis but i don't always believe them and when i do meh it's alright they freak out and tell me if i don't have confidence why do i bother to write.

Another problem with my ethic is i don't spend enough time on one project, i get another story idea and if i get blocked on my current one i just stop and then work on something else.

I guess the question i have is what suggestions do you brilliant folks have on my work ethic and do you have any suggestions on fine tunning my current work.

Also my parents think i'm a joke when i say i want to be a writer and tell me that my stories are too weird and disturbing. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Every writer has his own work ethic but its not unique to put one idea to bed if you feel that you have to get something else off your chest. You did state that you always try to finish a project if you feel its good or bad and thats a good thing, also the letting the dust settle and re reading at a further date works for me and on occasion i've suprised myself with something that I felt to be mediocre originaly. The confidence thing is natural, at least I think so. Im a pretty artistic person and I value any skills and or talents I have but writing is the hardest, for me anyway, to share with others. For example I'm not a bad guitarist, some say I'm quite good but my point is I can write a riff and play for it others with no problem and the same goes for my drawings / paintings but when it comes to showing people my written work I struggle and often put people off saying I just need to change a few details or something. I think it is fair to say that if you never want negative feed back then don't be a writer because if you put your balls out there often enough then someone is going to kick them eventiualy. As far as your parents I think its natural for them to want thier child to take on a safer path in life i.e. a nice safe factory job that guarantees a wage but you have to dance to the beat of your own drum and don't forget most writers, until really established, work in another job, I could be wrong but I think Craig Clevenger still slings drinks every now and again to pay the bills and he's a fucking genius. Find your own rythm and stick with it, if you feel you need the occasional kick up the ass then try Chucks method of, once again I could be wrong and it might not be Chuck, sitting down at your computer / note pad and setting an alarm for one hour. If when the hours up you still sat in front of a blank screen / page then call it a day but if the alarm makes you jump because your really into a flow then turn it off. You may be the next Pappa Hemingway and you may be shit, only one way to find out.

Oh and welcome to the asylum.

Don't dis the Ontario school system, guy!  I'm in it and I'm a badass motherfucker when it comes to the s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g.  What part of Ontario, d'you mind me asking?

Anyway in terms of your work ethic, I think that it's fine.  I also think that you more or less already know that it's fine.  Welcome to the forums though, stick around, learn to spell, send me presents... uh, that's about all there is to it...

no worries.  chuck's spelling isnt that grandiose either.  mine needs checking now and again, though four years ago it was horrendous.  definitely get that shit in check, if you can find time.  work on your grammar.  paramount.  it's okay to break rules for your art, but not  when you break simple ones for no reason.  destroys your writing authority.

dont trust parents.  utilize their guidance in life acknowledging that they've experienced more on an emotional level than you, but dont trust their assessments on your art.

being a writer is something very different from starting out learning to be a writer.  that is a tough road, and i dont recommend the road for travel.  lots of isolation, spending an incredible amout of time in your own head and averse to external forces ... and trying with all of your bite and grit to make it happen.  takes time.  be prepared to spend most of your time writing utter shite.  i understand the constraint of coming from a not so great schooling--coming from washinton state really feels like a handicap sometimes because the fact is that it is the worst  district [where i'm from:  tacoma] in the US of A and i didnt get guidance and i received no tools--and when i started writing i spent a ridiculous amount of time with grammar texts and learning to spell.  quite an unappreciated role.  if you want to make it as a writer, be prepared for rough times, but the utter feel in moments of clarity is amazing.  one of my favorite authors is craig clevenger.  he had a secure job, close to six figures, and gave it all up to write.  his grammar and work ethic is greater than mine and you can tell by his writing how much lost time and countless nights by himself he's put into his work.

if you have some work you want to work through, you may want to consider isolating some pages and joining the workshop here.  the workshop is not functioning at the moment, but it should be back to full scope by may 20th, the release date of snuff.

so.  welcome to the cult and good luck with your writing.
