Blind member needs help finding homework assignments please
Hi,
I am a blind member here, having a good bit of difficulty navigating with my screenreader as the web site seems to be fairly graphics driven. Could someone direct me where I should go to find the homework assignments please?
Also, I had a heck of a time finding where to type this message, and I hope this is the right field. Is the edit field for the body of your message shown between the subject line and font choices, I can't really tell with the screenreader. I can usually navigate forums pretty easily, but this one is quite different than most it seems.
Much thanks for any help.

Are you talking about Chuck's essays? I'm not sure what else would be labeled as "homework assignments."
anyway, here's the link to the page with them on it.... http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/workshop/chucks-essays

Ah, geez, now we have to redesign the site again...
Seriously, it might be helpful for him to change the color of this "new comment" box to a ligther shade of blue to help it stand out more...maybe like the cornflower blue in the header?

Ok, I did find the essays I think, but thought I read somewhere there were some type of assignments available through the workshop. So is the workshop just a critique and be critiqued type situation? And to the one who asked, yes you can use the computer and the Internet with a screenreader that indeed reads the text. Unfortunately, it doesn't like graphics much or moving text, so if there is much of that, it gets finicky. I looked at the workshop FAQ and it informed me that it was under construction and down at the bottom around the questions that dealt with assignments and something called self assignments, it broke off and no more FAQ. So, I am really "in the dark" here so to speak. Sorry, couldn't help that one. Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

well, usually at the end of his essays Chuck will have some sort of assignment or "homework" for people to try out the idea he was presenting in the essay.

Hi Silverfish,
There are homework assignments at the end of each of the archived 2003 essays, I believe. I can check with our Workshop adminstrator to find out where exactly they are.
I can also contact our Site programmer, Kirk to find out if we can create a special "role" or user group for you that does not show graphics. Do you mean flashing banners and things like that slow your screenreader down? We could also possibly turn off avatars and signatures if that would help.
I'll ask them both to check this thread and chime in.
that was so wrongful i should definitely get a apologies, especially of tony's half.
Hi Mirka. Hmm, I don't really think that avitars and signatures slow Jaws down, (That is the name of the program) but I do think that flashing lights and moving text do. Not really sure what can be done about it. My husband is also blind and is much more in the know about the program than I. I will pick his brain a bit on this. Anything that could easily be done without messing things up for all the rest of you would be wonderful. Here's another question. I noticed that there are essays for 2008, 2004 and 2005. What happened to 2006 and 2007? I didn't see 2003 either. Am I looking in the wrong place.

Hi Silverfish,
It was my mistake. The essays started in 2004 through 2005 and just returned this January. The homework assignments are at the end of each 2004-2005 essay. There are no homework assignments with the new 2008 essays. There are also Q&A'swith Chuck regarding the essays for the 2004 through 2005 batch.
Is Jaws able to open the essays for you? If not, it might be a problem with the java script used to keep the essays from being copied. Pick your husband's brain and let me know what we might be able to do to help you navigate the website more easily.
I have emailed both Kirk and Mark (Vigorous Puppy, workshop admin) and I am sure they will review this thread when they next check their email.

Silverfish says: I noticed that there are essays for 2008, 2004 and 2005. What happened to 2006 and 2007?
Mark answers: Hi, I am Mark Vanderpool, the Writer's Workshop Administrator. I am also known as vigorous puppy in the forums.
Chuck supplied us with a new craft essay for each month of 2004 and 2005. Then he got really busy with some of his other jobs, like writing novels and touring to promote them. Relative to the website, he occasionally takes on other special challenges--specifically, answering his fanmail. When Chuck tells us to announce a fanmail window, every letter postmarked during the selected month gets forwarded through his agent. Chuck personally answers each and every letter sent during that time. There are so many of them, that it takes him several months to personally respond to each one. So, in addition to writing novels and touring to promote them, another thing that Chuck did when we wasn't supplying new craft essays was to answer a great big batch of fanmail.
For 2008, new essays from Chuck mark a special return to the web site and an added treat for our workshop members. Chuck has juggled other responsibilities to make it possible. He has also had two years in-between to think more about his process as a writer and to generate new ideas on the craft and discover the best way to express them.
As Nate and Meerkah both pointed out, the 2004 and 2005 essays typically follow a format that begins with an anecdotal introduction and then transitions into a specific homework assignment for the aspiring writer. When you write something that answers or addresess one of these learning assignments, you may then submit your work into the quote Chuck Shop unquote portion of our workshop. This is now a simple check box option during the workshop submission process.
Quote Self Assignment Unquote refers to free form prose submissions of any kind, including those inspired by assignment ideas that you generate for yourself, based on your own needs as a writer.
We have a few small sticking points in the assignment submission process right now. Things that must be ironed out with the development of our all new version of the web site. When these small matters are resolved, you will be able to submit your work for review. At that time, you will choose whether to address one of Chuck's assignments or to make up one of your own, with each piece that you submit. When you choose a quote Chuck Shop unquote assignment, a special drop down menu will feature a listing of assignment names based upon Chuck's original 24 essays. You will choose based upon the assignment you've written to, so that each individual reviewer will know what to look for in supplying you with the most helpful feedback.
While we resolve a few small issues in the submission process, you may begin by reading or listening to each of Chuck's assignments through your reader, and taking notes toward the refinement of your own ideas for a story submission that incorporates the suggested tools or techniques. You may also like to begin drafting your own stories, in full, right away.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. You can reach me by posting here or by sending e-mail to workshop at chuck palahniuk dot net.
Kind regards,
Mark Vanderpool
