basic site navigation

Aloha,

So, I just signed up as a premium member and I remain terribly confused. My basic goal was to be able to read the writing essays and *hopefully* participate with others in sharing and critiquing writing. Unfortunately, I am very confused about the where and how of the workshop.

Is there a document somewhere that explains all the basics of how it works? For example, the basics of submissions, reviews, group, blogs, etc.? I've spent several hours looking through FAQs, forums, and anything else but I just can't make heads or tails of it. I've figured some stuff out by just dumb luck and trying different stuff, but I remain pretty confused.

It would really be helpful to send some kind of document or links when a person pays to become a premium member. If the instructions exist somewhere on the site, they are buried beyond my ability to find.

I really hope someone can help because I'm excited at the idea of what this site offers. At the same time, I hope this was not a waste of money.

Thanks in advance.

We're in a "pardon our dust" situation at the moment. See if you can PM vigorous puppy or jkabol or maybe mirka, they're pretty knowledgeable about the workshop n stuff. I haven't been in there in awhile, but I'm, meaning to get back into it.

fair enough. perhaps someone could post here about some basic things:

1) how to reviews work?
2) can you read reviews of other people's work?
3) do you just randomly review stuff or is there a logic to reviews?
4) how do you submit something for review?
5) does chuck still do q&a for the essays?
6) what are groups and how do they work?
7) what are the blogs?
8) what else have i left out?

Perhaps this thread could be used for new members so they have a resource to look for information about the site.

thanks,
david

Re: basic site navigation

1. You read a piece in the WW, then click on submit a review...
2. I think so, yes.
3. Review 5, submit one, that's the only rule...
4. Go to the Writer's Workshop link.
5. No.
6. They've been fairly useless, but they're for more focused special interest, mailing groups, sportstalk, etc.
7. They are blogs. Like your own private threads.
8. Wander around the forums, you'll get used to the place soon enough.

when i search through people's submissions, i can sort by genre, type, etc. when i look at the chuckshop category, is there a way i can select the submissions by which essay they are addressing? that is one of the things you can put on when you submit so i figured there is a way to search by that as well. is this correct?

The new workshop is a little f'ed up. They're working on getting it fixed, but the site has other pressing needs as well. I say muddle through and do what you can, good things are on the way.

does anyone else, when they click someone's name to PM them, it just takes you to your inbox? you still got to go to [compose] and type in the person name manually to send a PM. for me at least it does that.
