Obey
Barca is the official Cult lover of King. He's the one that could probably tell you the most about whatever you're wondering.
I know we've had threads about this in the past. Maybe if you try searching you'll find something helpful.

I loved those books. Everone has different favourites, For me the first one (the Gunslinger) was slow going but then 2 and 3 were great. 4 is superb and 5 wasnt bad, then to top it off 6 and finally seven was great.
To get a good idea of it, its best to read parts 1 and 2 before deciding is the rest worth it. To me its my favourite series and fairly different from Kings other work. Its kind of his Lord Of The Rings or Gormenghast.
Wickerkat and Correllion would also be good to ask about the Dark Tower.
Dark past, bright future, living abroad, well read. You're like the reincarnation of James Dean, hopefully with better driving skills ( Tomstrong on me, best compliment I ever got! )
Now I'm all excited about reading books 3 through 7!!! YES!!!!!
But my library is missing books 3, 4, 5. And yet they have three or four copies of the last two. Weird, eh?
King is a genius, though. A pure genius. A prolific genius. I am inspired by him right now. MUST WRITE!!! AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
p.s: I'm reading For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway right now and it is awesome.
I know two people dedicated to the series and love it. Way to big for me to try and read though, I do a small book a month. I'd be dead before I got through em all.
When did the future switch from being a promise to being a threat?

You are in for such a threat with 3 and 4, amazing books. 3 carries on the story and four goes back to before the Gunslinger, Im jealous you are reading them for the first time.

i enjoyed the series alot. especially wizard and glass...i think thats the one. it gets into roland's origins. king tells a good story consisting of witches, cowboys and gunfights. wolves of the calla is also a good one.
You can now get the Dark Tower graphic Novels. I think it came out in 7 issues and most good comic stores should have them.

I think reading some of the other books where the Gunslinger was entwined made me enjoy them more. I was slow to getting to #1 but then finished the rest of them off as they came out. I really loved the last one way more than I thought I would.
not sure what you mean about the editions. they are the same as any other book. hardcover, softcover, paperback. etc. I know there are some limited editions, and I think they may vary in the artwork, but as far as the actual writing goes, they are all the same no matter which one you get for each specific book.
Now there is one book that has an alternative version and that is the first one, The Gunslinger. The difference is that the original edition contains some minor details and concepts that were introduced, but that the author decided to either not talk about or just drop alltogther in later books. The new versions eliminates these, and then adds some more stuff in that better relates to the later books and just more content in general to make up for the cuts.
Either one is up to you, I personally feel that the revision wasn't neccesary. You can just ignore the stuff that doesn't matter and use your imagination to try and fill in the gaps for the rest. Maybe you should read the original and then the series all the way through, and if you ever want to reread it again, then start with the revised version that time.
That's what I did the second time I read the series.
As far as the graphic novels go, they aren't just comic adaptations of the books. They technically are prequels that take place before the first book, although they do contain some sequences that appeared in the original series in the form of flashbacks as well as brand new stuff exclusive to the comics. So pretty much all of the stuff in books 2, 3, most of 5, and 6, 7, aren't in the comics.
oh yeah, and this a lot of reading.. but I started the series right after the 4th book came out, and it was five years later until the next one, and then a year after that for the following two. so it gave me plenty of time to get caught up. readers that picked up the very first book on publication had to wait over 20 years for the series to complete!

I am on book 3 right now, anyone who wants to get into the series should sit down with the gunslinger and read as much as you can within one sitting. Oh and buy as many of the books as you can at once... Once you get into the story and get comfy with kings writing style you can breeze through these books quicker than what you would think and it honestly becomes addictive.
