who can cook a steak?!
ive a few steaks that ive been meaning to eat. who knows how to prepare and cook a great steak. i dont have a grill, so theres that to take into account. im thinking i'll pan fry it. anyone have a recipe thatll make me happy?
give the goods. im hungry.

Tiny bit of olive oil and butter, for inch think steaks, four mins per side on medium heat does the medium rare trick.
Marinade them how you like, but I'm a fan of a plain old pepper, or Kansas City rub. Try it with horseradish instead of A-1 or some other atrocious sauce, or try it with a simple cognac cream sauce, which is prepared as follows:
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) unsalted butter
2 shallots, finely chopped
1 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper
2 cups low-salt chicken broth
1/2 cup Cognac or brandy
1/4 cup whipping cream
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in heavy medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add shallots and sauté until beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Add pepper. Add broth, Cognac, and cream and boil until sauce is thick enough to coat spoon, whisking occasionally, about 15 minutes.

Who can't cook a steak?
i was hoping for a recipe of preparation thatd dazzle me.
i usually dont salt or pepper my meat and eat it near raw. no sauce, no nothing. i just love the taste of meat, but i thought id try something new.
i may try harcandys method.
^ i concur.
after marinating in beer (guinness is ideal because of the heavier taste), season it with salt and cracked peppercorns, better if you use the salt with some lemon rinds, then maybe add a little bit of garlic powder.
while cooking, brush with a layer of olive oil, soy sauce, and lemon juice. if you want a little more traditional taste, brush it with mesquite bbq sauce, not too much though so as not to overpower the taste of beer and spices.
I barely cook mine. The rarer, the better. But cooking a steak, besides a ham steak, on a pan sounds like blasphemy. Get a grill, preferably charcoal. Gas is acceptable, but looked down upon.

My husband cooks steak for a living but he'll probably just say something like, "Just put it in a pan and flip it a few times."
Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the little old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.

i cant have a gas or charcoal grill in my apartment so that advice, despite its veracity, is worthless.
garlic and beer sounds like a nice mix.
I quoted to edit, by accident and now I can't go back to actually edit. Oh well.

i love steak!
Steak is a tasty treat, I say, but I'm not as girly as Angela is.

I never grilled steak.
I sometimes barbecue it...
But usually I marinate it with soy sauce, onions, salt, and pepper...then I fry it.
I drown my steak in Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder for a half hour and then put it in the pan- 3 1/2 min per side. Other than putting them on a super hot pan dont touch it for the 3 1/2 until you have to flip it.

I am also a fan of just basic steak, I rarely use marinades and I never use bbq sauce. But I refuse to eat a steak without pepper and horseradish. Not cream horseradish, straight up. A good hefeweizen is also necessary.

Hefe with steak? No no no, if you must have beer, drink a Belgian tripel, and may I suggest Chimay. It goes much better with steak.
Steak- it depends on the cut of meat. A good cut of steak needs nothing but salt and pepper, THATS IT!
A good filet or NY strip, ribeye, etc all you need to do is let the steak get to room temp(, yes trust me on this,) before you cook it. That way the steak doesnt go into 'shock' when it hits the pan cold.
Get yourself a good cast iron skillet and like lofi said, get it red hot, the hotter the better. Salt and peper your steak mere minutes before you put it on the grill, you dont want the salt to pull out too many juices.
Depending on doneness you like, a 1 inch steak needs approx 3-4 minutes per side. Never flip more than once.
Again like lofi said, when the steak is done , rest it on a plate with a tin foil tent for about 5 minutes. For a real treat, put a pad of (real) butter on the steak while its resting. You steak will be magnificant!
For future reference- with good cuts of meat, dont ruin them with marinades and sauces. Steak Au Poivre is an exception to this rule.
With cheap cuts of meat, marinade to your hearts content. I make a pretty kick ass Bulgogi using skirt steak.
I appreciate that you enjoy your steak with Chimay. I appreciate mine with a Hefe. No further comment necessary.
