Where my athiests at ?!?!?!?
Has anyone seen the movie "Religulous"?
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of criticisms that could be made of the film in its attack on organized religion. It's not about to convert anyone, but if you already swing that way.... Damn it's funny.
I enjoyed it. And I love the way Maher just layed it out at the end. I hate movies, books, any media, that takes a soft line at the end. Maher just flat out says how he sees it, and I like that brazen approach.
(SEE CHOKE FIRST!!!!) But then go check out Religulous if you feel so inclined.
wonder who will water all the children of the garden when they sigh about the barren lack of rain and droop so hungry 'neath the sky?
bill maher is the reason bad things happen in the world.
hes detrimental to all that listen to him or watch his stupid fucking show.
this thread title reminded me that i hate it when people write more than one question mark after a question.
In his defense, he alternated exclamation marks with question marks.

In HELL.
Jane, you know this isn't true. They're really enduring in purgatory.
Brevity is the soul of wit, my friend.

I wish I was religious, so I could be a frothing bigot, a hypocrite, and have an excuse for killing my own children. I'd put anybody different into special camps and rape and murder anyone who believes differently. The great part is I'll probably have an ancient book or some old guy who tells me what to think, what to eat, who to hate, and why I should subjugate and control women and beat my kids to teach them right from wrong.

Hitler was an athiest, I wish I was an athiest so I could kill millions of Jews.
Don't confuse theism with tradition. Some people call it culture... whatever, culture, tradition, same shit. A personal belief in a God or, if you want, more than one, has nothing to do with a fondness for capital punishment and indifference towards child abuse. You're going to argue that it's used as an excuse and as such that excuse should be taken away. But how many people refuse to listen to The Beatles in protest against Charles Manson?
Who the hell is Stanlin?
I did use too much punctuation, and I prefer a fencesitting agnostic over an athiest anyday. I just thought I'd use a stronger subject line.
Atheism is just as defiant and pig-headed as theism. I prefer approaches similar to Maher, where the emphasis is placed out doubt rather than certainty. People can feel however they want about the origin of life and the nature of god. Humans, as a species, just seem wholly incapable of remaining neutral towards others with opposing beliefs.

It's painfully obvious that there's no god and anyone who says different is either living in a fantasy world, trying to sell you something, or both. Every religious person at one time or another has experienced doubts about their faith or the nature of god when they come across something that seems to not make sense, except they make some kind of rationalization and go about their day. Belief in god is just comfortable self-delusion because death and stuff are really really scary concepts.

Who the hell is Stanlin?
Oh, no one. Just a Dictator who turned a whole superpower Nation into an Atheist statet during the 20 Century.
But I am sure my paranoid superhero is unimportant to world History...
One must die in order to be resurrected.
I prefer a fencesitting agnostic over an athiest anyday.
Agnostics don't believe that the existence God can be proven, that doesn't make them 'fence sitters'. But who am I to argue? I'm just a frothing bigot that believes in killing children, etc. etc.
(:
Get a spark in that head of yours, and don't let anyone blow it out.
If people believe in an afterlife that's better than this life, why don't they all kill themselves? Why don't they say it's awesome when people die? If grandma keels over she's in heaven and no longer suffering from the effects of old age, so why cry at the funeral? She's surrounded by fucking angels now! If you believe in heaven, why not celebrate when someone rams a plane into an office building, killing thousands? They're all in paradise!

I really don't think Bill Maher being a dick to religious figures is going to persuade any reasonably intelligent and educated people that god doesn't exist.
"Earlier this evening, Gordon Blackstone. He was banned why? Frank claims I was lying of Tony. Though he will always be with me. For a thought is important no matter what it be. I think Tony Demireo (Life Martyr or for some []/bracketz) will be around for a long time..." -Gordon Blackstone
Reasonably intelligent and educated people are more likely to believe god doesn't exist.

Yeah, no agenda there...
But the conclusions - in a paper for the academic journal Intelligence - have been branded "simplistic" by critics.
Professor Lynn, who has provoked controversy in the past with research linking intelligence to race and sex, said university academics were less likely to believe in God than almost anyone else.
A survey of Royal Society fellows found that only 3.3 per cent believed in God - at a time when 68.5 per cent of the general UK population described themselves as believers.
The only people that he bothered to study were university professors, running under the general assumption that academics are smarter than everyone else. That's specious at best.

That's not what I was saying Ted. I was saying his crude humor isn't going to change anyones mind who's smart enough to matter. I don't care which you believe because I've been on the fence my entire life.

Seven. Go find seven chickens and make sure to stab each of them in their right eye, or else it won't work. Oh, and the lottery has to has to be no greater than the pick-6. Voodoo is tricky like that.

I don't like the whole idea of 'god', a kind of grand creator, authority, judge, destroyer...I think we really sell ourselves short, as if we are willing to give up credit for our own unique insights in this life in order to avoid responisibity when we're less than perfect, or worse, a supreme fuckhead...
The world, our reality, all the little fucking bits and forces and chemicals and charges and energy and life and motion, we are the life behind it! All of us, we make this world what it is, for better or worse...we are everything...you, me, all of us, we are god...

I disagree. In what way(s) is it obvious?
Belief in god is just comfortable self-delusion because death and stuff are really really scary concepts.
Another opinion, and I disagree again. Because someone can come up with a purely human explanation why someone would believe in God doesn't refute God's existence at all.
If people believe in an afterlife that's better than this life, why don't they all kill themselves?
Is this directed generaly towards all religions with an afterlife? Because, I could answer this pretty easily from a Christian perspective.
Why don't they say it's awesome when people die? If grandma keels over she's in heaven and no longer suffering from the effects of old age, so why cry at the funeral? She's surrounded by fucking angels now!
Again from a Christian perspective, people cope with death because they know the loved ones place in the afterlife. Nothing is wrong with mourning though, especially if you loved them.
If you believe in heaven, why not celebrate when someone rams a plane into an office building, killing thousands? They're all in paradise!
Honestly? Life ended short should be praised?

maybe hanging out with some atheists?
for the record, this was based on the fact that he spelled atheist wrong....just so it makes sense, no matter how stupid it may be
I believe a thought can be your friend
I believe the point has been made
There's no evidence of god, so we can assume there's no god.
Ax cuts both ways. There is no evidence of no god either.
People of all cultures, from the most primitive to the most advanced, believe in God. There's more than psychology or even "fantasy" here; there's a reason. They don't have to work themselves into belief. Quite the contrary, it's a natural conclusion based on the observed order of the world, more like an effortless response than a contrivance. Atheism is the real anomaly. The response that's unnatural, forced, and artificial. Disbelief, not belief, takes the real effort. It's almost as if man has to talk himself out of believing in God.
There's no evidence of god, so we can assume there's no god.

It may just be me, but that doesn't make sense. How can you have evidence of not having something?

The very idea of atheism is ridiculous... literally translated, it means without belief in gods, but it has also been used to mean without belief...which is impossible. If you believe in nothing, than that is still a belief, of sorts.
This is why I am an agnostic. I just don't care...as someone once said..."it neither picks my pocket, nor breaks it."
