Dear Admins
Why can't you delete people's accounts if they ask you to? I'm sure there's some illegality in that denial. If someone no longer wishes to have their stuff here, which, by the way, they can edit out in all totality, then surely you could have the thing, the whatsit, the thing, I'm just typing now, you know what it is I mean, when it's like a goodness? The... the charity, maybe, the goodness will do, the goodness to just make it all easier for them, and say, sure, you know, yeah, we'll get rid of your stuff for you, it only takes us about ten minutes, it would take you WEEKS to trudge through all the shit you've heaped on us, as we begged you to stop, we'd be fucking delighted to get rid of you! Why can't you just do that, you know? Some people have habits of coming on the internet all the time, I'm not a man of willpower, I can barely even manage to think about actually getting out of bed so I can lazily piss all around the bastard toilet and onto the seat too because lifting that thing up at seven in the afternoon, after I've gone to bed late, at nine in the afternoon perhaps the day before, why can't you just get rid of my shit? Jesus Christ. What possible fucking use is it to you still being here eating up the things, the wiggabytes and shit. Now I'm going out for a smoke and a beer and when I get back, I want an answer. THANK YOU KINDLY.
Edit: don't take the above as an attack, more of a plea.
I'm drunk and high, and my immediate reaction to this is fuck your face off. And see you in the morning, chump. I'm starting to learn how to not worry about anything and it's making me a more effective mother fucker. Fuck all of your faces. And I say this with love.

every thread you started would be deleted, including all the posts others made with you
that thread is not your sole property
every post in other threads that are your individual posts, they an make many of the other posts not make sense kinda like this sentenze
this includes but is not limited to intensive discussions, threads, reviews youd written for others
all in all, it's a bit of a damper on the community as a whole
and yeah, ask the admins not the mods.

william burroughs said two very important things:
1. the first was (paraphrased) "I never had a problem giving up junk. I could endure the sickness. I kicked habits whenever i felt like doing so. But i would always return to it eventually. Not becuase there was a real urge, but becuase there was nothing else to do."
2. "never have sympathy for the mentally ill. i have no time for that drivel"

That's good stuff right there!
I don't want sympathy, and I refuse to make a big deal of this. I need to go, and not with ill will. The Cult has done more for me as an institution than family or school. I need to grow up and leave home. Nate's highschool metaphor is applicable. Burroughs is someone I respect intensly and impulsively, but fuck him all the same. Junk has an addictive metabolism, it isn't a routine, and dropping out of college and spending time on here, that shit is a fierce routine, and fierce to break too. Plus, you people must be sick of me by now. I'm sick of me and sick of you too. In a loving way.
This is pretty apt though. I mean, people should have the right to request all the shit they post here be deleted. I mean, I have posted a lot of personal information (including my phone number and home address) here when I was younger and didn't know any better. There's also a lot of really embarrassing shit that can be brought up if you google me. I mean, I don't really give a shit about Alx or Alex or Corellion or whatever and why he's "leaving" or any of that, but mods/admins/etc should be able to delete every post made my a certain user.

that was so wrongful i should definitely get a apologies, especially of tony's half.
Jkabol hit it on the head.
Not to mention even if I deleted your account, anywhere you were quoted would still remain since at that point, it is no longer considered to be one of your posts. Plus things like Google Cache and archive.org would still have your posts.
The fact is, it's 2008, you really shouldn't be saying things on the internet you wouldn't want the whole world to know. Once you put something out there, it is there for good.
All that said... I will look into a way to delete the content of all posts by a member who wishes to leave. This has never been much of an issue for us, so I didn't build anything that could handle such a request.

Hey Kirk, we keep it simple and simply do not delete accounts at all. If members want to leave they should delete all the information in their profile and never log in again.
I don't know how many times I've been asked to delete accounts and a few months later that person comes back.
I bolded part of your statement and that's basically the truth. 2008! The world wide web is here to stay so people should not post personal information and they should choose user IDs that can't be traced back to them if they are concerned about their privacy.
that was so wrongful i should definitely get a apologies, especially of tony's half.
But people change all the time and regret decisions they've made. I think people should be allowed to delete their accounts, either that or you guys need to enforce a no personal information rule. Shit is wicked on these mean streets, and like you said Mirka, it's 2008! Everybody is on the web, and everything is googleable, which wasn't so obvious when some of us joined up, but it seems like the vast majority of the world is very needy and suspicious and googles everything they can. Obviously some sort of system should be in place for drunken claims of departure, like Jill's Tit always does, that idiot, but to deny the removal of personal information from a public forum is, I'm sure, illegal. Not that I'm threatening litigy, or whatever, I'm just saying that there's a certain amount of personal freedom you need to allow people to have. The ability to delete information they've submitted is important.
It's all in the TERMS OF USE here: http://chuckpalahniuk.net/tos
When you create an account you are required to check of that you have read and understood it. It's been in place for years.
that was so wrongful i should definitely get a apologies, especially of tony's half.
I remember back when i first joined....in '04 or something. We had this thread "post your full name and social security number!" i totally posted and then this creepy ex of mine found me via google and it was sheer terror after that.
sheeer terrror i tell you.
sheer.

the world wide web is NOT here to stay. in a couple years it's gonna be that GRID thing.

I'm just saying, I think it'd be kind of you to let people do it if they wanted to.
Because the first knee-jerk reaction we should have for you is the wanting to do kind things?

Are you even remotely able to read or do you just have a fetish for inserting yourself into a discussion with the most club-footed gallop imaginable? This is no longer about me, it's just a general query now about reform in the Terms of Use. Aside from me, earlier - and now you - it's been wonderfully civil and has even started to approach the realm of a nice and proper debate. Instead of ruining that, just take yourself elsewhere, post a picture of a kitten or something.
Dude, if it's that big a deal, go through and delete all of your posts' content.
Did you bother reading the thread at all?
I was sarcastic in this thread from the get-go. As someone who was recently burned pretty badly by someone reading their old posts, I'm still 100% with Mirka and the ToS on this one, and think that any sort of reformation is unnecessary. If you don't think you should say it, don't say it. If you don't think you should post it (like a picture or a phone number) don't post it. Develop your inner voice. Exceptions maybe can be made for minors or extenuating circumstances, like stalkers, but generally, we all have to learn that the internet is not a vacuum of information. Pictures of yourself with a bong on myspace can and will be seen by your mother. Pictures of yourself naked on the cult can be seen by other people. Grow the fuck up, Alex.
In English, when we say: "It is raining"
What the fuck is IT? Sometimes I wake up in a cold sweat afraid that IT has found me.
Sure, sure. BUT when shit's been said before those facts were ever considered, BY A MINOR too, then surely some level of lenience is to be allowed? Or is NO! WE ARE THE MASTERS OF THE CULT. YOU ARE ON THE RECORD. YOUR OLD MESSAGES ARE INDELIBLEY USEFUL YOU MAY NOT REMOVE THEM EVER EVER EVER EVER! WE ARE REMOVING THE EDIT FUNCTION FOR THIS SPECIFIC REASON AND ARE PRINTING T-SHIRTS WITH YOUR COMMENTS ON THEM.
So it's the Cult's fault that you didn't consider those facts before you posted personal information that you now want deleted?
It's not about the information being forever useful to us or some idiotic thing. It's about how it shouldn't be the moderator's/administrator's job cleaning up other people's purposeful "omg now I regret it!!!" mistakes. I, for one, am not a fan in contributing to the death of personal responsibility.
In English, when we say: "It is raining"
What the fuck is IT? Sometimes I wake up in a cold sweat afraid that IT has found me.
Of course it shouldn't be the administrators job, I'm glad we agree on something. So why not make it possible for a user to do it themselves, efficiently and without hassle for any party involved? Allowing something like that to be available, surely, is exactly what the moderator and administrator positions are there for. As it'd been said, it's 2008. Potential employers spend hours googling up any information they can on applicants, they stalk facebook pages and copy and paste forum usernames. This was not something I ever considered people suspicious enough to do. You win, blah blah blah. My point is I have the right to remove previously posted information (which is in no-way impeded by the current system) but I'd like it to be possible for a mass removal of old posts.
Also, fuck you. Stop giving me rhetorical questions that I've not even approached implying. I've never blamed the cult for any information I've posted here. You continually refuse to accept the passage of time, that something someone might once have thought a good idea, will, in the morning, be considered a bad idea. I'm sure you've done something you've later regretted, yes? Now imagine what you regretted was perhaps painting your bedroom walls bright green. You can undo that, can't you? So would you try to paint over them, or would you sit there and sulk about your new immutably green walls? Oh, what's that Mr. Rhetorical - you'd paint over them? Well you don't say... I guess your point just vanished up it's own arse. How wonderful and fucking quaint.
in the olden days, you could only delete a thread you made within 24 hours. but since the switch to Drupal, all you're threads can be edited to delete them. In fact, Drupal will even help you. It deleted about 66% of my threads! The fucker!
in the heat of burning air to watch the naked famele body is insane,
I'll have you know it didn't delete your threads.
I did.
When we switched we made the decision to delete old threads that were below a minimum level of activity. I don't recall the exact numbers now, but I think it was threads with no replies in more than a year that had less than 10 total replies. The proper term is "pruning" and it's a pretty common practice.
